Fashion Police AE: Esmod Dubai Fashion Show 2012

Today, for the first time ever I got a guest to blog for ButterHotShoes. I did this because I attended a one of a kind fashion show which made me speechless and trust me this is not a compliment. Not only did the presenter start it off by pronouncing Givenchy wrong (he said Givenchy as in "give" with a hard G!!!), but most of the collection was disappointing. I don't know what to dislike most, the brick wall, or the banana dress... My friend Saeed who recently started the Fashion Police AE seemed like the perfect person to judge this fashion show. He's one of the most fashionable people I know so read below what he had to say about what we witnessed at Wafi a couple of weeks ago:

"In a recent event we were invited to, there were lots and lots of fabrics straight of the Satwa street strip. Yes, we were at the ESMOD-Dubai fashion show! We can’t say we loved it, or hated it either.
Many designers showcased their work, and we appreciated that very much; some of these designers should stick to just designing for their own selves for now we believe. Others have potential; they may not be up to our personal taste, but they are students after all so we hope they learn from our observations and notes.
The show consisted of three parts:-
First year students
Second year students
And boutique designers.
We the @fashionpoliceae will rate them in accordance to style, uniqueness and of course wearability on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being least stylish, unique and wearable.

First Year Students
Score: 4/10
The first year students deserve a 4 out of 10, although most of the clothes are wearable except for the ribcage dress (you’ll know which one I’m talking about), that just has so much print and color, and the brick wall dress that looks like a dress out of loony tunes. I mean I understand that there is so much construction happening around the city of Dubai, however fashion is about breaking walls, not building ones.  The show was a huge confusion between RTW and what I would like to assume is a Couture collection, however it has failed to achieve both status. The whole show lacked to achieve a theme, and portray any relation of one garment to another except for similar prints in three of the dresses. Given that they are 1st year students and require additional training we are hoping to see a huge improvement in their work in two years.

In Addition to the prints, color and misfortunate addition of accessories, there were the shoes that did not match the dresses or garments on the runway they just seemed like the models own shoes that they had to bring along, rather than shoes chosen specifically for the show!

I wonder if this big fashion influential college in the region has a stylist or someone on board to advise the students in styling a runway or an in-house stylist, but I doubt it.
Second Year Students
Score: 6/10
Secondly, as you know our motto is (You will be judged) and oh god how we do love judging fashion shows, the 2nd year students at ESMOD- Dubai presented us with a fashion show that we might as well say, enjoyed much better than the 1st year students. However it also lacked direction, production and definitely a theme. The fabrics used were richer than those of the 1st year students we particularly liked the spiked high platform heels, the suits and we definitely disliked the futuristic attempt of a suit in gray and silver that looked like the model has just landed in a UFO from mars, the backless ripped blazer or so I thought it was, and the rib cage straight jacket!   Over all the show was judged 6 out of 10.
However, we would like to see these students improve their stitching/tailor abilities and work on better design concepts, they must also work on better wearable options for buyers to regard as potential products, although the designs were very innovative and different, different is not always good in this case, and as you know in the fashion business one day you’re in, the next day you’re out.

Boutique Designers
Score: 8/10
Thirdly, it all has come down to the boutique designers, some of these labels we are very familiar with and have worn some of their designs before, some not so much and would never be caught dead walking around in, this show gets an 8 out of 10.
We highly commended the work of Madeyya Almazrouei it was executed really nicely and the fabrics were very rich and pretty although we did not like the bridal dress. Another designer we enjoyed was Selina Al Farouqi that beading was just flawless and the colors and fabrics were sensational, we have very high hopes for this name and we hope to see her showing in Paris Milan, London or even New York.  We loved the simplicity of the designs of Leenah Al Mansoori however the fabrics and execution was just utterly bad and lacked quality and composition, the clothes were not fitted nicely on the models either, we are hoping to see Leenah working on better tailoring and textile choice skills. Canella Hostel did an amazing job with the tailoring however, she lacked a theme and direction, and she also did a horrible job with the boob/cup shirt and skirt ensemble that looks like a cheap knock off the Jean-Paul Gaultier famous Madonna bra made into a horrible top. NOT GOOD.  We liked the big buttons and small polka dot dresses she did though; they were such a reminiscent of the 70’s inspired stay at home wives we would definitely wear the one in light blue with a white silk scarf. Arwa al Ammari, Fatma Gargash, and Dandoon couture we remain in different about, we did not understand the collection, we liked the Arabic scripted clothes in Dandoon, however we did not like the crop top with long sleeves that looks like a heavy weight was pulling it from the back and we definitely did not like the spider web/ fish net print.
Madeyya Almazrouei

 Selina Farooqui

Dandoon Couture
Leenah Almansoury
Fatma Gargash
Arwa Al Ammari
Canella Hostal

Women want to feel beautiful, always remember that when you’re making clothes for them, they want to be noticed for all the right reasons. I always ask a designer, how would you feel wearing your own clothes? Would you feel beautiful or just different? Always ask yourselves that when designing a collection, if you won’t wear it, chances are others would not either.
Finally, we would like to thank butter hot shoes for giving us a kick start into the blogging sphere in the UAE and we would be very happy if you could tweet us your comments on @fashionpoliceae, like us on Facebook Fashionpoliceae and follow our blog www.fashionpoliceae.com."

I agree that these girls are not talented, however, this post is very rude. Things could of been said in a nicer way, especially if you were trying to "help", you would humiliate them on a blog. Plus one of the first things they said is that the girls look pregnant, I don't think any of them are fat or look bloated/pregnant and if you do people like you are the reason we see so many girls starving themselves. Its not like the anorexic girls on runways look better and its not like the owner of this blog is thinner than any of them and she's still beautiful.

Well, they at least they have imagination(something which many people lack), they are putting themselves out there and are taking the risk to make their dreams come true while some of us are left to write about them.

Im an Esmod graduate, it may be so easy for you to sit there and judge but i guarantee that u as zubaida maybe a stylish person but both u and ur "guest judge" can not stitch anything near to what these students have stitched. And if u had the type of knowledge in fashion as u show off to, u would know that these students are not allowed to choose their own concept of design, their themes are given to them by their university/teachers.They follow instructions as given to them by 1 of the most top fashion universities world wide.Let me clear it out for u seeing that u failed to do.The 1st year students had 2 themes, 1 was architecture thats y the garments are very sharp and unusual, the 2nd was prints by artist paintings that had to be photoshopped. The 2nd year was the desert. How dare u sit there and judge their work when u never had a clue towards the theme.need i remind u that non of these students have ever stitched a day in their life before they joined the university. As for models, did u ever think that not every1 is as well off as u and cudnt afford to get a pro model?or pay for shoes to match the garment?
Please do get ur so called "Fashion facts" in order before u judge designers that are in the making.
Disgusted and disappointed from both of ur ignorance.

Dear Esmod designers/students above:

Please be assured this is not personal. I love you all and wish you all the best but When I was at the show, half of the people left mid way of the fashion show and I can hear the people next to me laughing and commenting about how disappointed they were in what they saw. I was not the only one that disliked some of the items. I also noticed a group of people who said they were not for the idea of the extremely revealing clothes on the runway as some families did attend this show - at some point we witnessed some of the model's under garments and b*tt cheeks...

As for me, I loved some of the things on the runway especially those by Madeyya, Fatma Gargash, and Selina; but some I was not so happy with. And I am entitled to that because we are all entitled to our opinions, right? I didn't insult any one nor did I say anything harsh. I am sure Saeed meant to be constructive after all he knows more about fashion details and collections than many of us. I apologize if what he said hurt you. But as Fashion designers you should accept constructive criticism and not be so sensitive about it - you can learn so much from different opinions (Just like me, I get lots of criticism and at the beginning it bothered me and still does sometimes but I learned so much from opinions and embraced it because in the end I realized most of it is true and we are all entitled to our opinions even if others may not think the same).

As for the models weight related comments - I did not say anything about that, and I don't know why you would mention that I personally can afford to higher pro models? I did not understand that part at all honestly :S and I don't understand why you said we can't stitch, How is that related to the design opinion? It's not about the stitching at all, it's about the over all design.

Anyways, love to you all and I hope you don't take this so personally because it's not. We love you all and wish you all the best, I never do judging posts but this was requested by many people after I revealed the pictures of the show and I always give my readers what they want. I didn't do it out of the blue nor intend to hurt anyone, it's purely criticism by Saeed who understands fashion very well.

I agree with Z, why is everyone taking this as being rude? I was at the fashion show too and wished some one would say something about it. The previous Esmod batches were soooo much better.

PS - As an agreement with you, I will remove the weight comments, and I'm sorry it offended some of you.

love the new blogger! hes honest but not too mean ;) and we all can learn some lesson from this one. y everyone saying he was bitchy.... i only see constructive things and i am a fashion designer myself fyi reading things like these teaches me a lot. i remember when i was in college my professor said to us that the most important thing in fashion is listening to others not only ourselves. new and different opinions construct our work. even though i have been i nthe business for 7 years i am still learning and wanting to listen to peoples opinions. it will help u to grow and develop.

love from Beirut xoxo

sorry to say but some of the comments are very childish. I've noticed people in dubai don't like to be criticized! I agree that the show is not so nice and i only like the Selina collection, i can wear that dress many times it's very cute.
